“Being present”, “slowing down”, “being in the moment”. What if all of these were a misrepresentation of mindfulness? What if there was more to mindfulness than we have been told? What if a mindfulness practice led far beyond destressing, calming or focussing into a depth of awareness that was revolutionary for your life and way you live it?
Mindfulness in Buddhism is essential to unlocking what it is to be fully human. In this 8 week course we look to show you how mindfulness can help you bring awareness to the processes of your mind as well as bring you into a deeper connection with others around you.
Course description
Establish Foundations: You will learn the fundamentals of mindfulness practice and be guided through positive routines so that you can create a sound basis to build mindfulness. You will have simple and down to earth practical actions you can undertake to start out or deepen your mindfulness.
Gain Self Awareness: At the end of the course you will have gained a greater sense of how you respond or react in different circumstances. You will get a better understanding of habits that undermine you or hold you back. You will be able to navigate and transform destructive emotions as they arise.
Make Better Decisions: You will be able to make better decisions in the moment and have more freedom of choice as you will be less determined by old habits and repetitive ways of acting.
Learn About the Buddhist Vision: You will be introduced to the Buddha’s vision of liberation that is the potential of any human being who makes the required effort. That vision can be the beginning of a life dedicated to growth and transformation from negativity to connection, meaning and courage.
Week 1: General mindfulness. Establish the basic conditions needed in your environment and day to day life to start a sustainable and effective mindfulness practice.
Week 2: Mindfulness of the body. Reduce mental chatter and proliferation through developing an awareness of the body and its movements.
Week 3: Mindfulness of Vedena. Come into a deeper connection with the pleasurable, painful or neutral quality of the sensations that make up your experience making us more aware of what is going on for us and better able to respond.
Week 4: Mind. Noticing the stories we tell about ourselves and the world and how that forms our experience of ourselves and the world.
Week 5: The teachings. Looking at your experience in the light of what you have learned. Reflecting on what you know is in your best interest so you can make better decisions and disrupt repetitive habits and patterns.
Week 6: Art, objects and nature. Bringing more awareness to art and nature so that our world is elevated beyond our normal mundane experience into something more rich and full.
Week 7: Others. Extending our awareness beyond ourselves to include those around us so that we can better connect with other people and live in a greater sense of community and friendship.
Week 8: Reality. Bringing to mind the Buddha’s teachings on reality.
Is this course for me?
The Life With Full Attention course is open to everyone, including complete newcomers, and is suitable for starting out on a mindfulness practice or deepening it if you already have one. By the end of the course you will have all the tools for a lifelong mindfulness practice and you will be well placed to engage with any class at the Cork Buddhist Centre.
The classes take place at the Cork Buddhist Centre, in a friendly environment. They are led by Buddhist teachers who will guide you through each week's topic, answer your questions, and help you to reflect on how the teachings are relevant in your life. There will also be opportunities to connect with others, through discussion and a tea break.
Course dates: 8 Weeks, Friday 5th Sept - Friday 24th Oct, 7.00 - 9.00
